Steven Walsh (Musical Director)

Steven Walsh

Steven was born in Huddersfield and began to play the Euphonium at the age of 10 in the Linthwaite Band.

In 1994 Steven began lessons at Huddersfield Music College with the Euphonium legend Geoffrey Whitham and very soon Steven’s talents were recognised when he became the principal Euphonium of the Hepworth band at the age of 16.

During the same period he made regular appearances with the James Shepherd Versatile Brass. At age of 18 Steven was asked to join the famous Leyland band  under the charismatic direction of Richard Evans.

Steven has been principal Euphonium in some of England’s top brass bands, but regards his years with the Yorkshire Building Society Brass Band under his mentor Professor David King as his most successful, recording numerous award- winning CDs, winning the All England Masters, the British Open and representing England in the European Championships on 3 occasions, winning twice. He  also performed in the Sydney Opera House as part of the YBS ‘Kings of Europe’ Tour in 2005.

In 2006 Steven completed his Masters in musical performance at Salford University.

In 2007 Steven was awarded the Best Euphonium and overall brass winner of the European solo championships held in Birmingham, beating musicians from all over Europe.
In 2009 Steven joined the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band on Principal Euphonium and was awarded the ‘Best Soloist’ prize at the 2009 British Open Championships. He then went on to win the Yorkshire Area in 2010 and 2011 and was awarded with the ‘Best Instrumentalist’. The highlight of his tenure with the band was winning the National Brass Band Championships in 2010 & 2011

Steven leads master classes throughout Europe and the UK as a Yamaha artist.

2017 Area Test Piece - Pagaentry

Pageantry - Herbert Howells

There is no doubt that Herbert Howells's suite 'Pageantry' is one of the true masterpieces of the brass band movement.

Written for the 1934 British Open Championships (although the second movement was omitted for the contest), it was a revelation at the time - a work of true English modality, but with rich echoes of almost medieval flourishes allied to exotic flair and immensely detailed technical demands.

It remains to this day a most severe test of musicianship for players and conductors alike, and as a result has been resurrected on innumerable occasions to test bands - most notably of late at the All England Master Championships in 2001, although used a few years later in the First Section at the National Finals.
However, since 1995 Howells's great work has undergone a little musical restoration and is no longer a work untouched.

Review: Diggle Band at Boarshurst Band Club 6th November '16

Full article available at:

Another top drawer performance from Saddleworth’s Championship section band

Nearly five months ago, last night’s band darkened the doorstep of Boarshurst Band Club on a soggy Sunday night. Saddleworth’s Championship band gave us a fantastic concert. Though considerably lighter, that Sunday night was drizzly.

Five months later, more of the same weather though considerably darker. The most illuminating aspect of the damp November night was Diggle Band’s performance. Though we thought their June concert was superb, they excelled themselves. With Matthew Brown as guest conductor, we were treated to a traditional yet pulsating programme.
