Welcome to the Diggle Band of Saddleworth!

The official website of the Diggle Band.

Diggle Band is a traditional amateur English Pennine village brass band consisting of 25 players, 2 percussionists and a conductor. Diggle Band's revival has been remarkable.  From reforming in 1996, the band has risen from a first place in the 4th section in their first ever appearance at the NW championship in 2000, up through the 3rd, 2nd and 1st section - qualifying a total of three times for the National finals, crowned National champions once (3rd section) - to gaining promotion to the Championship section in 2015. The band regularly performs music from a wide repertoire in concerts both locally and nationally and also takes part in a number of brass band competitions each year. For booking details please email the event secretary This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Death of Alan Rhodes

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of band President Alan Rhodes early this Tuesday 17th October 2017. Alan has not enjoyed the best of health in the past year and had to spend his last few months away from his beloved home at Harrop Green Farm.

Alan Rhodes was Diggle Band’s president since the band was reformed in 1996; he played a significant role in making the dream of once again having a band in Diggle came true. He made an indelible mark on the band's history, and we wish to extend our sincere condolences to his wife Dorothy and the rest of the family. The band will never forget him or his contribution.

A winter warmer from Saddleworth’s

Championship section Band

After a scorching summer performance, Diggle Band returned to the Boarshurst Band Club with a real winter warmer. Once more, the Boarshurst audience was treated to a superb concert which warmed the cockles of our heart. For six of your finest British Pounds, a delightful night with some great solo pieces.

As for the programme, a lovely mix of brass banding classics and something new to engage the audience. This was not your microwaved pub lasagne with a perfunctory garnish. This was a Sunday dinner with freshly cooked vegetables, the finest beef, and a home made Yorkshire Pudding.

Diggle Band’s Musical Director, Steven Walsh said he was fifteen years old when he last went to Boarshurst Band Club. Back then, he was playing for Linthwaite Band. On Whit Friday, he would have seen Robert Knight’s pork pies and the plethora of sandwiches and other snacks they sold. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Last night, he left Boarshurst Band Club on a high.

Steven Walsh (Musical Director)

Steven Walsh

Steven was born in Huddersfield and began to play the Euphonium at the age of 10 in the Linthwaite Band.

In 1994 Steven began lessons at Huddersfield Music College with the Euphonium legend Geoffrey Whitham and very soon Steven’s talents were recognised when he became the principal Euphonium of the Hepworth band at the age of 16.

During the same period he made regular appearances with the James Shepherd Versatile Brass. At age of 18 Steven was asked to join the famous Leyland band  under the charismatic direction of Richard Evans.

Steven has been principal Euphonium in some of England’s top brass bands, but regards his years with the Yorkshire Building Society Brass Band under his mentor Professor David King as his most successful, recording numerous award- winning CDs, winning the All England Masters, the British Open and representing England in the European Championships on 3 occasions, winning twice. He  also performed in the Sydney Opera House as part of the YBS ‘Kings of Europe’ Tour in 2005.

In 2006 Steven completed his Masters in musical performance at Salford University.

In 2007 Steven was awarded the Best Euphonium and overall brass winner of the European solo championships held in Birmingham, beating musicians from all over Europe.
In 2009 Steven joined the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band on Principal Euphonium and was awarded the ‘Best Soloist’ prize at the 2009 British Open Championships. He then went on to win the Yorkshire Area in 2010 and 2011 and was awarded with the ‘Best Instrumentalist’. The highlight of his tenure with the band was winning the National Brass Band Championships in 2010 & 2011

Steven leads master classes throughout Europe and the UK as a Yamaha artist.
